Better Showers Start With Understanding Your Water.
Shower water is not the same everywhere. Its composition depends on your water source, how it is treated, and the plumbing it travels through. Here is a plain, non-alarmist look at what that means — and where a shower filter genuinely helps.
Why shower water composition varies
Public water systems in the United States are regulated and routinely tested. Even so, two homes in different cities — or on different streets — can receive water with different mineral content, disinfectant residual and sediment load.
Chlorine and water treatment
Municipal systems commonly use chlorine or chloramine to keep water microbiologically safe as it travels through the distribution network. That residual disinfectant is doing important work, but some people notice it in the smell of their shower or in how their skin and hair feel afterward.
How much a shower filter reduces chlorine-related compounds depends on the filter media, water chemistry, water temperature, flow rate and how old the cartridge is. We do not publish removal percentages without independent testing to support them.
Hard water and minerals
Hard water generally refers to elevated dissolved minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium. Mineral content can contribute to residue on surfaces, scale buildup, reduced soap lather, and a different feel to hair and skin after washing.
RAINLY is not a whole-home water softener and is not designed to remove all dissolved calcium and magnesium from water.
Sediment and metals
Fine sediment can enter water along the distribution network, and certain metals can enter water through building plumbing, particularly in older pipes and fittings. This varies by water source, municipal treatment, building plumbing, pipe age and local conditions.
This does not mean every home has a contamination problem. If you have a specific concern, your local water authority publishes an annual water quality report, and certified laboratory testing is available.
What shower filtration can and cannot do
A shower filter is a point-of-use device. It is designed to help reduce certain unwanted substances in the water passing through it. It is not a whole-home treatment system, not a softener, and not a medical device.
